People who have an overwhelming, intense sense of fear and avoid certain places for fear they cannot escape may have a condition known as agoraphobia. This condition is a type of phobia that can cause people to avoid any situation in which they would feel helpless if a panic attack were to occur. Agoraphobia is best treated with a specific form of short-term psychotherapy called cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT).
