While many people feel some anxiety before an important event, an anxiety disorder is an illness that causes overwhelming anxiety and fear that are chronic and unremitting. There are several types of anxiety disorders, such as post-traumatic stress disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder, and agoraphobia. Scientists have found that adolescence is an important period for the diagnosis and treatment of an anxiety disorder. It is likely that if adolescents who suffer from mood and anxiety disorders are treated aggressively, many of these disorders can be prevented from becoming chronic.
