An anxiety disorder is an illness that causes panic attacks, obsessive thoughts, nightmares, and flashbacks of traumatic events. A person with this disorder feels an overwhelming sense of anxiety and fear. There are several types of anxiety disorders, including social phobia, panic disorder, and obsessive-compulsive disorder. Treatment for an anxiety disorder will generally involve medications, such as antidepressants and benzodiazepines, and psychotherapy.
