BuSpar Interactions Explained
The following sections explain in detail the potentially negative interactions that can occur when
BuSpar is combined with any of the drugs listed above.
Alcohol
Combining alcohol with BuSpar can increase your risk of side effects, such as drowsiness or dizziness. It is best to avoid alcohol while taking the medication
(see BuSpar and Alcohol).
Certain Antibiotics or Antifungals
Some antibiotic or antifungal medications can increase the level of BuSpar in your blood, possibly increasing your risk of
BuSpar side effects. Talk to your healthcare provider before taking an antibiotic or antifungal with BuSpar.
Certain Seizure Medications
Some
seizure medications can decrease the level of BuSpar in your blood, perhaps making it less effective. Talk to your healthcare provider before taking these medications together.
Diltiazem
Diltiazem can increase the level of BuSpar in your blood, potentially increasing your risk of side effects. Talk to your healthcare provider before using these drugs together.
Monoamine Oxidase Inhibitors
Taking an MAOI with BuSpar can cause serious side effects, such as dangerously
high blood pressure (
hypertension). In general, these medications should not be taken together.
Nefazodone
Combining BuSpar with
nefazodone can increase the level of both medications in your blood, possibly increasing your risk of side effects, especially lightheadedness, weakness, dizziness, and drowsiness. Your healthcare provider may need to adjust your dose of these medications to prevent drug interactions from occurring.
