Chlordiazepoxide Dosing: An Introduction
The dose of
chlordiazepoxide hydrochloride (
Librium®) that your healthcare provider recommends will vary depending on a number of factors, including:
- Your age
- The medical condition being treated
- Other medications you may be taking
- Other medical conditions you may have.
As is always the case, do not adjust your chlordiazepoxide dose unless your healthcare provider specifically instructs you to do so.
Chlordiazepoxide Dosing for Alcohol Withdrawal
The recommended chlordiazepoxide dose for treating alcohol withdrawal is chlordiazepoxide 50 mg to 100 mg per day initially, with repeated doses as necessary to control alcohol withdrawal symptoms (up to a maximum of 300 mg total per day).
Chlordiazepoxide Dosing for Anxiety
The recommended chlordiazepoxide dose for treating mild-to-moderate
anxiety is chlordiazepoxide 5 mg or 10 mg three or four times daily. For severe anxiety, the recommended dose is chlordiazepoxide 20 mg or 25 mg three or four times daily.
For treating anxiety and apprehension about having a surgery, the recommended dose is chlordiazepoxide 5 mg to 10 mg three to four times daily on the day(s) before surgery. Be sure to ask your healthcare provider exactly when to start and stop taking chlordiazepoxide for this use.
For treating
anxiety in children (age six and older) and elderly people, who may be more sensitive to the effects of the drug, the dose should be started at a lower amount, usually chlordiazepoxide 5 mg two to four times daily.
