Clomipramine and Breastfeeding

If you are taking clomipramine and breastfeeding at the same time, it is important to know that the medication does pass through your breast milk. Generally, healthcare providers recommend that it is okay to breastfeed while taking the medication because, in many cases, the benefits of breastfeeding a child outweigh the possible risks. However, the full risks to the baby are not known because there are still long-term studies underway that are looking at the effects of exposure to clomipramine when breastfeeding.

Clomipramine and Breastfeeding: What Does the Research Say?

A few studies have looked at the use of antidepressants (such as clomipramine) during breastfeeding. In general, these studies have shown that the babies had low levels of clomipramine in their blood and did not have any side effects. However, because there are long-term studies of the effects of exposure to clomipramine through breastfeeding, the full risks to the baby are not known.
