What Is Doxepin Used For?

Off-Label Doxepin Uses

On occasion, your healthcare provider may recommend doxepin for treating something other than depression. This is called an "off-label" use. At this time, there are several off-label doxepin uses, such as the treatment of the following conditions:

  • Chronic pain, especially nerve pain (neuropathic pain)
  • Migraine headaches
  • Itchy rashes (due to the antihistamine-like actions of doxepin).

Using high-dose doxepin capsules or liquid to treat insomnia is also an off-label use, since only the low-dose tablets (Silenor) are approved for insomnia treatment.
