Who Should Not Take Effexor XR?

You should not take Effexor XR if you:
  • Are allergic to Effexor XR, venlafaxine hydrochloride, or any inactive components used to make Effexor XR. Your healthcare provider or pharmacist has a list of the inactive ingredients used to make Effexor XR.
  • Are taking linezolid (Zyvox®) or intravenous methylene blue. Effexor XR should not be started in people taking linezolid or IV methylene blue, but a person already taking Effexor XR may be given linezolid or methylene blue, if absolutely necessary, and only with very careful monitoring and only if Effexor XR is stopped during treatment.
  • Have taken a monoamine oxidase inhibitor (MAOI) within the past two weeks. Also, you should not take an MAOI if you have taken Effexor XR within the seven days. Some examples of MAOIs include:
