Generic Luvox CR

There are currently no generic Luvox CR (fluvoxamine CR) products available in the United States. Until the patent for the medication expires in May 2020, other drug companies cannot manufacture any generic versions. Despite common belief, fluvoxamine (which is the "generic name" of the drug) is not the same as generic Luvox CR.

When Will Generic Luvox CR Be Available?

The patent for Luvox CR is currently set to expire in May 2020. However, situations could arise to extend or shorten the exclusivity period of the medication. This could include such things as lawsuits or other patents for specific Luvox CR uses.

Is Fluvoxamine a Type of Generic Luvox CR?

No --
fluvoxamine is the active ingredient in Luvox CR (as well as in the short-acting version, Luvox®), but is not a generic version of it. What can be confusing is that, oftentimes, the active ingredient of any drug is referred to as the "generic name." The generic name is different from a generic version of a medicine. In order for there to be a generic version of a medicine, the original medicine must have gone off-patent and another company besides the original manufacturer must make the product.
