Luvox CR Sexual Side Effects: An Overview
Luvox® CR (
fluvoxamine CR), like all selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (
SSRIs), is known to cause certain sexual side effects. With
Luvox CR, these sexual side effects may include:
- Decreased sex drive or orgasm problems
- Ejaculation problems
- Priapism, a painful erection that does not go away.
Interestingly, studies suggest that
impotence (also known as
erectile dysfunction or
ED) is not associated with Luvox CR. Fewer men taking this drug experienced impotence, compared with men taking a placebo (a "sugar pill" with no active ingredients).
Sex Drive and Orgasm Problems
Luvox CR is known to cause a decrease in sex drive (known as libido). In clinical studies where
Luvox CR side effects were documented, a decreased sex drive occurred in up to 8 percent of men and in up to 4 percent of women taking the drug. Also, up to 4 percent of men and 5 percent of women taking Luvox CR reported anorgasmia, which is the absence of orgasm. Both of these side effects occurred more frequently in the group of people taking Luvox CR, compared to the group of people taking a placebo.
Ejaculation Problems
Luvox CR is also known to cause ejaculatory problems. In general, medications like Luvox CR cause delayed ejaculation, although other unspecified ejaculation problems are also possible. In clinical studies where side effects were documented, ejaculation problems occurred in up to 11 percent of men taking Luvox CR, compared to only 2 percent of men taking a placebo.
