Clorazepate is a drug that is commonly used to treat alcohol withdrawal, anxiety, and seizures. The medication -- which is a benzodiazepine -- works by enhancing the effects of a specific calming chemical in the brain. As a result, it can reduce anxiety, stop seizures, and cause muscles to relax. Both short-acting and long-acting forms of this medication are available. Common side effects include dizziness, drowsiness, and nausea.

Possible Side EffectsAs with any medicine, side effects are possible with clorazepate. However, not everyone who takes the drug will have problems. In fact, most people tolerate it quite well. If side effects do occur, in most cases, they are minor and either require no treatment or can easily be treated by you or your healthcare provider. Serious side effects are less common.
