Anxiety Home > Luvox CR Uses
Luvox CR is used for treating obsessive-compulsive disorder. It is a type of antidepressant that can improve symptoms of this condition by balancing serotonin levels in the brain. Healthcare providers may also occasionally recommend off-label Luvox CR uses, such as treating eating disorders, personality disorders, and depression. The medication is not approved for use in children.
Luvox® CR (fluvoxamine CR) is a prescription medication approved for the treatment of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). Previously, Luvox CR was approved for treating social anxiety disorder (also known as social phobia). However, the manufacturer requested that the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) remove this approval, presumably because they did not want to do the necessary studies required for it.
Using Luvox CR for OCDPeople with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) suffer intensely from recurrent, unwanted thoughts (obsessions) or rituals (compulsions) that they feel they cannot control. Rituals such as handwashing, counting, checking something, or cleaning are often performed with the hope of preventing obsessive thoughts or making them go away. Performing these rituals, however, provides only temporary relief, and not performing them greatly increases anxiety. The exact cause or causes of obsessive-compulsive disorder are not fully known at this time.
Luvox CR is approved for OCD treatment in adults. Although medications are effective for treating the symptoms of OCD, behavior therapy is often used along with medications. Ask your healthcare provider about behavior therapy for OCD.
