An Overview of Generic Sarafem
Sarafem® (
fluoxetine hydrochloride) is a medication that has been licensed to treat premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD).
Brand-name Sarafem was first manufactured by Eli Lilly and Company. However, it is now made by Warner Chilcott. Generic Sarafem is also available.
Technically,
Prozac and generic versions of Prozac are not interchangeable with Sarafem. However, many healthcare providers will prescribe Prozac or
generic Prozac for PMDD, since these options are often more likely to be covered by insurance and may sometimes be less expensive.
Strengths of Generic Sarafem
At one time, brand-name Sarafem was available in both tablets and capsules. However, Warner Chilcott has stopped making the capsules. Although there are no generic versions of Sarafem tablets currently available, there are generic versions of the capsules.
Generic Sarafem capsules are available in the following strengths:
- Fluoxetine 10 mg capsules
- Fluoxetine 20 mg capsules.
One of the generic versions of Sarafem goes by a different name (Selfemra™). Even though the manufacturer of Selfemra chose to give its product a "brand" name, it is not a brand-name product, per se.
Who Makes Generic Sarafem?
Selfemra is made by Teva Pharmaceuticals.
Other generic versions are made by Mylan Pharmaceuticals and Sandoz.
