Serax® (oxazepam) is a prescription medication licensed to treat alcohol withdrawal and anxiety. It is a type of benzodiazepine that works by enhancing the effects of a naturally calming brain chemical (gamma-aminobutyric acid). Serax, which is only available in generic versions, comes in capsule form and is generally taken three or four times daily. Potential side effects include drowsiness, dizziness, and headaches.
