Side Effects of Trifluoperazine
Common side effects of trifluoperazine include drowsiness, dizziness, and sexual problems. In many cases, these side effects are minor and either require no treatment or are easily treated by you or your healthcare provider. However, certain trifluoperazine side effects are more serious and should be reported immediately to your healthcare provider. These include seizures, unusual body movements, and an irregular heart rhythm.
An Introduction to Side Effects of TrifluoperazineAs with any medicine, side effects are possible with trifluoperazine hydrochloride (Stelazine®). However, not everyone who takes the drug will experience side effects. In fact, most people tolerate it quite well. If side effects do occur, in most cases, they are minor and either require no treatment or are easily treated by you or your healthcare provider.
(This article covers many, but not all, of the possible side effects with trifluoperazine. Your healthcare provider can discuss a more complete list of trifluoperazine side effects with you.)
Possible Side Effects of TrifluoperazineTrifluoperazine has been studied thoroughly in clinical trials. In these studies, the side effects that occurred in a group of people taking the drug are documented and then compared to the side effects that occurred in another group of people not taking the medicine. As a result, it is possible to see what side effects occur, how often they appear, and how they compare to the group not taking the medicine.
In these studies, possible trifluoperazine side effects included:
- Dry mouth (see Stelazine and Dry Mouth)
- Insomnia (see Stelazine and Insomnia)
- Menstrual changes, especially missed periods
- Loss of appetite or increased appetite
- Blurred vision
- Muscle weakness
- Nasal congestion
- Difficulty passing urine
- Sexual problems (see Stelazine Sexual Side Effects)
- Darkening of the skin.
There have been reports that trifluoperazine may cause false positive pregnancy tests (a positive pregnancy test in an individual who is not pregnant).
