Alternative for Valium
Because it usually takes several weeks (and maybe even longer) to feel the full, beneficial effects of Valium® (diazepam), try not to be discouraged if this medication does not work right away for you. However, for some people, Valium does not adequately control symptoms or may cause bothersome side effects. Fortunately, there are several alternatives available for Valium. Some of these alternatives include:
- Cognitive-behavioral therapy
- Other medications.
Some of the medications that are considered alternatives for Valium include:
- Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs)
- Monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs)
- Tricyclic antidepressants
- Other anti-anxiety medications.
If Valium is not working for you or if it is causing bothersome side effects, ask your healthcare provider about trying an alternative.
