Valium
® (
diazepam) is a medication that is commonly used for treating alcohol withdrawal,
anxiety, muscle spasms, and
seizures. It is available by prescription only; there are currently no over-the-counter Valium products.
This medication belongs to a group of drugs called benzodiazepines. By enhancing the effects of a naturally calming chemical in the brain, Valium can help reduce anxiety, cause sleepiness, relax muscles, stop
seizures, and impair short-term memory.
Valium comes in tablet, oral liquid, and injectable forms. When used orally, it is usually taken three or four times a day (or sometimes more or less often, depending on the particular condition being treated). For the medication to work properly, it must be taken as prescribed. As a
controlled substance, Valium may cause serious problems if you take it at higher dosages or for a longer period of time than your healthcare provider recommends.
