Valium® (diazepam) is a prescription medicine approved for the treatment of anxiety, muscle spasms, and alcohol withdrawal. It can also be used in combination with other seizure medications to treat seizures. Valium belongs to a class of drugs called benzodiazepines, which work by enhancing the effects of a naturally calming brain chemical. Benzodiazepines have been shown to help reduce anxiety, relax muscles, cause sleepiness, and stop seizures. Potential side effects include fatigue, coordination problems, and drowsiness.
