Many people have heard of the prescription drug
Valium® (
diazepam) but may wonder, "What is Valium used for?" The medication is used for treating alcohol withdrawal,
anxiety, muscle spasms, and
seizures (when used along with other
seizure medicines).
On occasion, your healthcare provider may also recommend Valium for something other than these conditions. This is known as using the medication "
off-label." Currently, off-label Valium uses can include the treatment of the following conditions:
- Agitation
- Insomnia
- Benzodiazepine withdrawal (due to stopping a benzodiazepine medication too quickly).
Valium should not be used by young children. It has not been adequately studied in children younger than six months old. Talk to your healthcare provider about the benefits and risks of using Valium in children.
