There are several indications for
Xanax® (
alprazolam). This prescription medication is approved to treat the following conditions:
Xanax is approved for the treatment of
generalized anxiety disorder, as well as the short-term treatment of
anxiety symptoms due to other causes, such as stressful events. In many people,
depression and anxiety often come hand in hand. Xanax is also useful for treating anxiety associated with depression.
In addition, Xanax can be used as a panic disorder treatment and can be used to treat people with or without
agoraphobia. Panic disorder is a specific type of
anxiety disorder. People with panic disorder have recurrent, unexpected feelings of extreme fear and dread that strike for no apparent reason. These feelings can cause a racing heart, rapid breathing, sweating, and shakiness. A
panic attack may even occur when the person is not in a situation that would normally create stress, anxiety, or fear.
There are also several "
off-label" uses for Xanax, such as treating agitation,
insomnia, and premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD).
