Xanax Medicine

Xanax® (alprazolam) is a prescription medication used for the treatment of generalized anxiety disorder and panic disorder. It is not approved for use in children.

Xanax belongs to a class of drugs called benzodiazepines, which work by enhancing the effects of gamma-aminobutyric acid, a brain chemical that is naturally calming. It has several effects on the body and can help reduce anxiety, relax muscles, cause sleepiness, and stop seizures.

On occasion, your healthcare provider may recommend the medicine for treating conditions other than panic disorder and anxiety. Off-label Xanax uses can include the treatment of the following conditions:

  • Agitation
  • Insomnia
  • Premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD).
