Xanax® (
alprazolam) is a prescription drug commonly used for treating
anxiety. Even though most people respond well to this medication, you may want to consider a substitute if you experience any side effects or feel that your symptoms are not improving. There are two major classes of drugs used for treating anxiety:
antidepressants and anti-anxiety medications.
The different classes of antidepressants used as anxiety medications include:
- Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs)
- Tricyclics
- Monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs).
Since there are so many different medicines approved for the treatment of anxiety, you should talk to your healthcare provider if you are interested in a substitute for Xanax. He or she can help you decide which class of medications will best suit your situation.
