Xanax Substitute

Xanax® (alprazolam) is a prescription drug commonly used for treating anxiety. Even though most people respond well to this medication, you may want to consider a substitute if you experience any side effects or feel that your symptoms are not improving. There are two major classes of drugs used for treating anxiety: antidepressants and anti-anxiety medications.

The different classes of antidepressants used as anxiety medications include:

  • Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs)
  • Tricyclics
  • Monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs).

Anti-anxiety medications that can be used for anxiety treatment include:

Since there are so many different medicines approved for the treatment of anxiety, you should talk to your healthcare provider if you are interested in a substitute for Xanax. He or she can help you decide which class of medications will best suit your situation.

(Click Anxiety Medications for more information, including a list of products that belong to each of these different drug classes.)
