For the treatment of anxiety, the recommended starting dose of Xanax^® (alprazolam) is 0.25 mg to 0.5 mg three times a day. Depending on how you react to the medication, your healthcare provider may increase or decrease your dosage as needed.

A higher Xanax dose is usually needed for treating panic disorder; but your healthcare provider may start you on a lower dose (such as 0.5 mg three times daily) to help prevent side effects.
